Unlocking the power of data is a top priority of the UK Government and Third Sector in 2023. Governments around the world are increasingly turning to data-driven technologies and algorithms to support decision-making and improve public services operations. We are likely to see both an increase in the quantity of data that wider public sector organisations are collecting and a stronger emphasis on the quality of data so that emerging technologies can provide more accurate insights.
There will be a trend to increase data-sharing amongst government, non-profits, the private sector, and social enterprises. Advantages of data-sharing with the private sector are that it creates business value and benefits the public interest. But as public sector data-sharing increases there are challenges to ensure it is safe – the more data in circulation, the higher the privacy and security risks.
A further trend is an ardent desire to move to the cloud. The Office for National Statistics have overcome barriers to cloud migration and has a target of having 80% of its infrastructure in the cloud by 2023. Cloud services alongside the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotic process automation, will give government organisations hyper-automation opportunities.
Further, Cap Gemini predicts that big data and analytics will play a more significant role in public sector operations in 2023. The use of big data and analytics can improve decision-making, develop new data-driven services and applications to support the delivery of public services to improve organisations’ ability to automate and analyse vast volumes of information.
Increased data collection and linkage is also being used to shape more targeted, predictive public services and streamline approaches, as governments seek to improve service provision, increase efficiency or lower costs.
