About Station10

Station10 was the codename for Bletchley Park, the home of the WW2 code breakers. We might not have a top-secret base (…we’re based in Farringdon!), but like them, we decode vast amounts of data to crack seemingly impossible problems.

We translate data into everyday language that drives positive change and accelerates strategic growth for a range of “big-name” clients, through defining, improving and transforming the digital and customer experience.

We are looking for a dynamic Head of Data Science to join our growing team, to play an important part in our fast-paced and collaborative environment. The successful candidate will work across several projects focused on modelling complex business problems and deploying data products at scale whilst delivering excellent client satisfaction. You will play a pivotal role in growing the Data Science team whilst analysing and manipulating various types of datasets and generating insights from complex data that brings innovative solutions to our clients. Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspire, lead and grow the Data Science team
  • Reporting to our Delivery Director, you will define the roadmap and priorities for the
    Data Science Team in alignment with the company strategy.
  • Articulate the strategic and commercial value of Station10’s data science function,
    ensuring data science IP is developed and protected.
  • Drive business development activities, including client pitches, estimating briefs/scope
    and marketing activities.
  • Ownership of process to deliver accurate scoping of data science projects to ensure
    projects are delivered with the right resources, to scope, budget and deadlines.
  • Drive innovation through advanced data science expertise and latest technologies to
    deliver solutions for the benefit of our clients and business.
  • Lead and manage a portfolio of data science projects with support from the wider teams
  • Lead and coordinate the cross-functional efforts to deliver data science related projects
    ensuring a high standard of quality and governance of the models and data products.
  • Translate unstructured, complex business problems into the appropriate data problem,
    model and analytical solutions
  • Develop, implement and maintain tools, machine learning models and algorithms in a
    manner which meets regulatory and evidential requirements.
  • Make Station10 a destination employer for people with data science skills.
  • Hiring, supporting and coaching new team members. Ensuring they are thriving in their role within the team and that Station10 has the data science capability it needs to drive progress and deliver an outstanding experience for our clients.
  • Drive and encourage team-wide diffusion of knowledge and being a source of analytical and data science best practices
  • Supporting the careers of our Data Scientists through pro-active coaching, mentoring and regular 1-2-1s.
  • Developing, maintaining and applying ongoing knowledge and awareness in trends, standard methodology and new developments in analytics and data science
  • Review and develop working practices to ensure that data science work is delivered to robust quality standards
  • Be passionate about furthering our competitive advantage in data science by leading new R&D into our data science methods and technology stack and empower the team to develop their capabilities
  • Be an advocate for integrity and trust in all outputs from the team with an unwavering commitment to “doing the right thing”
  • Ensuring projects are delivered successfully – time tracking, resource requirements, escalations, removing blockers, upskilling, budget management
  • Build strong relationships and trusted partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders (internal and external), ensuring that Station10 successfully delivers operational solutions and client service excellence.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in similar data science/analytics related roles
  • Degree, preferably higher, educated in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics,
    or other technical fields
  • Recognition as a subject matter expert in the data industry
  • Proven success in delivering descriptive and/or predictive analytics solutions to drive
    business benefit
  • Extensive industry experience in predictive modelling and analysis
  • Extensive experience in building and deploying machine learning models in a cloud
  • Extensive experience manipulating and analysing large, high dimensionality,
    unstructured datasets, drawing conclusions, defining recommended actions, and
    reporting results to a high level stakeholders
  • Extensive experience of algorithm design, development, optimisation, scaling and
  • Extensive experience of statistical analytics, data visualisation and storytelling
  • Expertise with one or more standard scientific computing tools (Python, R, Julia,
    MATLAB), database querying (SQL), version control (Git), cloud computing infrastructure
  • In-depth understanding of several areas of machine learning (supervised and
    unsupervised learning, time-series analysis, natural language processing, computer vision) and working knowledge of common techniques (linear models, decision trees, neural networks, PCA, clustering) and their advantages and disadvantages
  • Demonstrated experience in hiring, retaining and scaling diverse high-performing teams.
  • Experience of managing data scientists and leading ML projects into production
  • Ability to conduct independent research, demonstrated by a strong publication track
    record in the field
  • Proven success of dealing well with ambiguity, prioritising needs, and delivering results
    in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – exceptional relationship building skills both with direct team members and stakeholders; with an ability to explain complex technical solutions to a business audience in a succinct and accessible form
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, business analysis, commercial awareness and consultancy skills
  • Passion for technology and learning new skills and technologies
